Let's dive in.
Google pauses AI image generation
Google just hit the pause button on Gemini's power to create pictures of people. They decided to take a break after people pointed out that Gemini was trying too hard to include everyone, but it wasn't getting it quite right.
Highlights:
Diversity Efforts Go Viral: Gemini tried to make sure its pictures of people showed all kinds of different folks. But when it started making mistakes, especially with making pictures of white people, everyone on X started talking about it.
Google Says "Oops": Google said they were trying to make sure everyone felt included, but they admit they didn't get it right this time.
Big Talks About AI: This made a lot of people start talking about how AI thinks and how to make sure it's safe and fair.
Taking a Breather: For now, Gemini won't make any more people pictures until Google can figure out how to do it better. They promised a new and improved version will come out soon.
Why it's important: Getting AI to understand what's fair and respectful is super hard, and Google's oopsie shows just how tricky it is. As AI starts making more stuff we see and use, making sure it doesn't play favorites is super important.

Reddit files for IPO and cashes in on AI data licensing deals
Reddit, the place where all the quirky and unique hobbies hang out online, is about to become a big deal by going public. They're talking about making more than $800 million in a year!
Highlights:
Big Bucks: Reddit's bringing in over $800 million in 2023, which is a big jump from $666.7 million the year before.
Lots of Visitors: The number of people visiting Reddit every day went up by 27% at the end of 2023, with an average of 73.1 million unique visitors every day.
Special Treat for Fans: The Wall Street Journal says Reddit wants to give some shares to its biggest fans, but they haven't said how many yet.
Looking Ahead: Reddit thinks it will make even more money from ads and selling information.
Sam Altman's Stake: Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, owns 8.7% of Reddit and could make a ton of money when Reddit goes public.
Why it's important: Reddit made more than $200 million just by letting other companies use its data. This info is super useful for creating AI apps. Plus, Reddit just made a deal with Google for $60 million, letting Google use its data, which shows how valuable Reddit's information can be.
Groq: the fastest AI
Groq, an AI startup, is making waves with its tech that's super quick at running big language models (LLMs), not to be mixed up with Elon's project with a similar name.
Highlights:
Speedy Tech: Groq's using something called LPU (language processing units) which is way faster than the usual GPU (graphics processing unit).
Super Fast: Their machines can handle 500 pieces of info per second. That's a lot more than the 30-50 pieces per second that older AI like GPT 3.5 can do.
Quick Demo: There's a demo showing Groq's stuff working about 4 times faster than GPT 3.5 on the same task.
Name Drama: Groq, which started in 2016, had to tell Elon Musk's company to stop using the name 'Grok' for their chatbot.
Why it's important: Seeing Groq's speed in action is the only way to get how fast it really is. This lightning speed could change how we use AI, making things way smoother for users. Plus, LPUs might just be the next big thing if you can't get your hands on a GPU.
You can try Groq here.
