The AI chatbot to create virtual worlds
Roblox, the popular gaming platform, has introduced a new AI chatbot known as Roblox Assistant. This chatbot is designed to assist game creators in building virtual worlds simply by typing text prompts.
Highlights:
Generating Environments and Objects: Roblox Assistant can transform text descriptions into virtual environments, objects, and even basic gameplay. For instance, typing "spawn near a campfire in ancient ruins" would result in the creation of ruins complete with a campfire.
Enhancing Accessibility: Roblox sees AI as a way to reduce the technical barriers for creators, allowing them to focus more on their creative ideas and less on technical complexities.
Launch Plans: The assistant is expected to be available for use in late 2023 or early 2024. Future plans for the AI include enabling it to generate more complex gameplay and 3D models.
What It Means: With over 200 million monthly active users, including 43% who are under 13 years old, Roblox's introduction of AI tools can empower a new generation of young creators to explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence in game development.
ChatGPT vs. MBA students: who is more creative?
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania decided to put AI, specifically ChatGPT, to the test against 200 MBA students from Wharton School. They wanted to see how good AI really is at generating creative ideas compared to humans.
Highlights:
The Challenge: Both the students and ChatGPT were given the same challenge: "Come up with an idea for a new product or service that would appeal to college students and could be priced at $50 or less."
Measuring Creativity: To measure creativity, the researchers looked at three factors:
Quantity of Ideas: They counted how many ideas each group came up with.
Average Quality of Ideas: They assessed the quality of the ideas and how likely people might be to purchase them.
Exceptional Ideas: They looked at the top 10% of ideas to see if any of them were truly exceptional.
The Results: Here's what the researchers found:
Quantity of Ideas: ChatGPT produced ideas much faster than humans, which wasn't a big surprise.
Average Quality of Ideas: ChatGPT's ideas had a purchase probability of 47%, while the human-generated ideas scored 40%.
Exceptional Ideas: When it came to the top 10% of ideas, a whopping 88% of them were generated by ChatGPT, leaving only 12% to the students.
What It Means: This study is just one more piece of evidence showing that AI, like ChatGPT, is incredibly capable when it comes to tasks that used to be thought of as uniquely human, like creativity.
AI's Thirst for Water: A Growing Concern
Creating advanced AI, like ChatGPT, requires a lot of computer power, and that generates heat. To keep these machines cool, they need water, and a recent report from the University of California has raised some eyebrows.
Highlights:
Water Consumption Spike: In 2021-2022, Microsoft's worldwide water use shot up by 34%, and Google also reported a 20% increase in their water usage during the same time. The researchers point to the growing demands of AI as a significant reason for this surge.
How Much Water Does AI Use? To put it in perspective, it's estimated that Microsoft's data center in Iowa uses about half a liter of water to support just 5 to 50 ChatGPT queries. The amount can vary depending on where the servers are located and even the weather conditions.
Big Tech's Response: Tech giants like Microsoft and Google acknowledge that AI training is water-intensive. However, they're also highlighting their efforts to use renewable energy, improve efficiency, and promote sustainability.
Why It Matters: As we continue to advance in AI, it's important to consider the environmental impact. With growing concerns about our planet, the water consumption of AI technology is becoming a significant public issue. To ensure sustainable progress, transparency and efficiency in AI development will be essential.
Meta is building an open-source GPT-4 competitor
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has set its sights on creating a new AI model that can rival OpenAI's GPT-4. This ambitious project is expected to kick off in early 2024, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Highlights:
Aiming for Power: Meta's upcoming model is not looking to be just another AI. It's aiming to be significantly more powerful than its current model, 'Llama-2.' The goal is to empower businesses with advanced text generation, analysis, and more.
Democratizing Access: Mark Zuckerberg's vision includes making this AI accessible to a broader audience. It will be trained on Meta's infrastructure and open-sourced, emphasizing the company's commitment to giving people access to this technology.
Competition Heating Up: This development comes in the midst of a growing AI arms race. Google is also working on its powerful Language Model (LLM), 'Gemini,' which is rumored to be even mightier than GPT-4. The competition is pushing the boundaries of AI technology.
Why It Matters: As companies like Meta, Google, and others continue to innovate in AI, the pressure on OpenAI to keep advancing its models grows. This race for AI supremacy has the potential to shape the future of technology and how we interact with it.
Stability AI's Music Magic
Stability AI, known for its AI-powered innovations, has unveiled Stable Audio. It's a fresh AI product designed to whip up impressive music and sound effects just by using text commands.
How It Works: With Stable Audio, you can simply tell it what you want - like the music genre, choice of instruments, or the mood you're after. Then, like magic, it crafts complete music tracks or a variety of sound effects for you.
Expanding Horizons: This launch signifies a big step for Stability AI as it ventures beyond dealing with images and text. They're now diving into the world of audio, making use of their versatile multi-modal AI strategy.
Try It Out: You can test the waters with Stable Audio. They offer free 20-second audio samples to spark your creative fire. If you're serious about it, their Pro subscriptions let you download 90-second audio clips for commercial use.
Why It's Important: This tool from Stability AI is a fantastic source of instant inspiration for creators, especially musicians. It simplifies the music creation process, but it also raises questions about the role of AI in artistic creation, similar to what we've seen with AI-generated music like AI Drake.
