Microsoft’s bet on Open AI
The news of the week is the AI love story of the year between Microsoft and OpenAI.
The tech giant is looking to invest a whopping $13 billion into OpenAI. And let me tell you, Microsoft has been killin' the AI game last years:
Invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 (link)
Owns GitHub, which released Copilot
Brings DALL-E 2 to the masses with Bing Image Creator (link)
GPT-powered Bing search
GPT in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc (more details later)
And now they're taking it to the next level with new round of investments into Open AI. It's like they're on a roll and ain't no one gonna stop them.
Here's the rundown of the new deal:
Once Microsoft's $92 billion in profit and $13 billion initial investment are paid back, and the other investors earn $150 billion, all the equity goes back to OpenAI (link).
OpenAI is thinking about going non-profit again after the profit is returned.
They're considering increasing the limit for investors, instead of a strict limit, there's a 20% increase per year, so investors can still get VC-like returns.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, doesn't have equity in the for-profit arm, it's uncertain if this deal will change that.
So there you have it folks, the latest on the Microsoft and OpenAI love story. Stay tuned for more updates, because you know there's bound to be more juicy details to come.
Microsoft AI vision: Word + ChatGPT
Microsoft is trying to add OpenAI's chatbot technology to Word and Outlook (link).
Can you imagine sending an email or writing a Word doc and having a little chatbot assistant by your side? It's like having your own personal C-3PO, except way less sassy and way more helpful.
"Hey Microsoft Word, can you help me proofread this document?"
"Sure thing, big boss. I'll go through and flag any spelling and grammar mistakes for you."
Or maybe you're sending an email and you can't think of the perfect word to use. No problem, just ask your chatbot friend for suggestions.
"Hey Microsoft Outlook, I'm trying to think of a word that means 'full of life and energy', but I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?"
"How about 'vivacious' or 'ebullient'?"
See?
Having a chatbot assistant in Word and email could be a game changer. But it takes time to accomplish these things. Stay tuned for updates on this one.
VALL-E launch by Microsoft, the new text-to-speech model
Did you hear the scoop? Microsoft released VALL-E, the most advanced text-to-speech model around.
Here's the deal - all you need is a 3-second recording of your voice and a written text, and boom! VALL-E creates a personalized audio file for you.
And the best part?
It doesn't need a ton of training data to make the speech sound natural. It can even keep the same emotions and background sounds.
That's seriously impressive, right?
VALL-E has so many possibilities. Imagine making your audio podcast from text messages, or reading personalized audiobooks with the author's voice.
You can even test it out on their project page (link). Just don't get too hyped, because the code isn't open-sourced yet.
Looks like Microsoft is dead serious about the AI game, yo. They're not messing around. They want to be the top dog in the AI world, and they're pulling out all the stops to make it happen.
